Hello Everyone, Welcome to my new blog, BoggsInBrazil. I hope you are excited to see god knows what kind of fun situations I encounter down in Brazil. Now I don’t know what you expect from a blog – perhaps a lot of boring text, maybe some interesting anecdotes, and then a few decent pictures. If you thought that’s what this blog would be, you’d be thinking 2006. What I’m doing with this blog is high tech 2007-2008 – I’m going video on that shit. I bought this little pocket video camera, the “Flip”, so I can document my whole journey. Well, at least the most interesting parts. What’s cool is that I can upload my videos directly to this blog, so for those lazy ones out there, you won’t need to do such taxing things as reading or scrolling. I do apologize if my face appears too big in some of the videos; I don’t have a tripod to set up a few feet away from me for recording purposes. Anyways, trying to record like that in Brazil might just leave me trying to chase down the Brazilian who just grabbed and ran away with the Flip video.
Now to give you the lowdown on Boggsy and this trip. For those who don’t know, I first went to Brazil in the fall of 2005. I took a short vacation from semester abroad (does that make sense?) with my boy Isaac Gross and Steph Finn to hit up Rio for 5 days. Man, I must tell you: I fell in love with Brazil, the people, small dental floss style bikinis, caiparinhas, the beaches, the Afro-Brazilian beats, the culture, and the warm people. They say the Brazilians are the most fun loving people in the world. I don’t really know if I can doubt that. Anyways, I find myself on glide year before medical school, and thinking, wouldn’t it just be great to go to Brazil again? So as Cartman says I do what I want. Anyways, I still have an active tourist visa from the last time I came (the current price for a tourist visa is about $130 good for 5 years of travel), so pretty much all I had to do was shell out some cash to fly down here and buy flights around Brazil domestically.
I then had to plan my route. For those who don’t know, Brazil is pretty much the size of the US, so this was fairl difficult. The main reason being, while I knew I wanted beach, Brazil has over 3,000 miles of beaches. Add in that Lonely Planet guides go national geographic magazine on every place (each place has a special charm– which is BS), choosing was fairly difficult. In the end, I had to go with Salvador de Bahia and Fortaleza–both are in the northeast, and offer an amalgamation of islands, beaches, dunes, and nightlife close by–in other words, clutch. These areas are also near the equator, so even in May (nearing Brazil’s winter) they should be nice for Boggs to parade the beach in a shiny new sunga. Maybe you’re glad that you can just hear about it and not be there. I will also be in Sao Paulo for a few days, because that’s where I got my flight into. I will try not to get mugged. Better be careful with the Flip.
It’s now Sunday night and I’m AMPED. I fly out Tuesday night on an all night flight to Sao Paulo direct from NYC. I get in around 9:30 in the morning, and then let the fun begin. I hope you all enjoy BoggsInBrazil! My goal is to provide an entertaining 5 minutes every few days. Until the next post…
